'The Right Choices' opens at Rome Airport in late 1958, where Marie and Carlo Bianchi are about to collect Marie's married sister, Catherine Vidal, née Gausey, who is arriving on an Air France flight from Paris' main airport, Le Bourget. Marie and Catherine are French, of Lozerian extraction, whereas Carlo is Italian and from Rome. He is a highly qualified and gifted monumental mason, who has a well paid job, working for the Compagnia Catagna, a Roman monumental mason business. The sublimely beautiful and elegant Catherine Vidal arrives at Rome Airport's Arrival Hall, dressed from head to foot in an all black Cristobal Balenciaga outfit. However, although exteriorly she appears unbelievably beautiful and elegant, dressed by the top Paris fashions houses of the day, she is deeply un happy in her marriage to Lozerian Paul Vidal. He is an immensely rich owner of garages in Paris, is feared and disliked by his competitors, probably has dealings with the Mafia and also is the holder of a Swiss bank account. As the novel unfolds, the reader soon finds out, that Catherine had gone along with her mother's plan to arrange a marriage between her and Paul Vidal, because she had initially found him attractive and had very rapidly fallen in love with him. However, once Catherine Gausey and Paul Vidal are married, things deteriorate at an alarming rate. Paul is perpetually and overtly sexually unfaithful to his wife Catherine, although he gives her four children, Louis, Elise, France and Monique, who become her 'raison d'être.' He frequently has sex with Parisian prostitutes in their apartment, whenever she is absent and suddenly the situatin comes to a frightening climax. He contracts syphilis from one of them and transmits the infection to his wife. Both Paul and Catherine are required to folow a year's course of extra-strong antibiotics, so as to rid them of the infection, but Catherine learns that although the infection has been removed, she will be never cured of syphilis. She is merely in remission' as is also her husband Paul. Marie Bianchi introduces her sister to Dr Mikos Domenikos, whilst she and Catherine are visiting the 'Centro di Esposizione Domenikos', situated in Via Borgia, near to Via Cairoli, which is not far from Rome's termini Train Station. He is the owner of the exhibition centre, which is displaying ancient Greek relics, which Dr Mikos Domenikos and his archaeological team had discovered in 1957, the previous year, under the soil of a village, near to Athens, the capital city of Greece. Catherine Vidal and Dr Mikos Domenikos fall immediately in love, as soon as they see one another. Both end up consolidating their love for one another by sleeping together and when they make love, they deliberately do not practise coitus interruptus.Catherine Vidal and Dr Mikos Domenikos make love fully, in the hope that they will become the proud parents of a baby. Ijn effect, after a week's holiday in Venice, Catherine Vidal has a pregnancy test at Dr Mikos Domenikos' general practitioner's surgery and a fex days later, discovers that she is pregnat. Both she and her paramour are overjoyed. Dr Mikos Domenikos wants her to divorce from Paul Vidal and to marry him and he would also like to officially adopt her four children, Louis, Elise, France and Monique. Catherine Vidal is overjoyed and looks forward to an future existance with her 'Apollo', the man of her life, the baby that he has given her and her four children, either in Italy or in Greece. However, her dreams are very soon shattered. One evening, an Italian lawyer friend of her sister and brother-in-law tells her in no uncertain terms, that she will probably never get custody of her four children, so that Dr Mikos Domenikos can officially adopt them, when she and he are married after her divorce from Paul.
