This story is of two good men, a small town, and a family of workers who changed the way the world transports its sick and injured. When Elroy Bourgraf and Dick Ferneau shook hands in 1956, they had more determination than money and more nerve than experience. Still, they believed they could do something unique, something no one else could or would do. Their elevating X-frame stretcher was a simple idea with tremendous consequences. They made a cot that, for the first time, took care of not only the person on it but the person carrying it. Their vision was to think the unthinkable and imagine how it could be better, more tolerable, more dignified, safer. They worked shoulder-to-shoulder with their crew in the company's Blue Room, a place where their dreams were translated into metal. Meanwhile, they built a family of employees in a town that had nearly given up on itself. The first tenant in an abandoned military base, Ferno brought hope and jobs to Wilmington, Ohio, which has remained home of its world headquarters, even as the company's global footprint expanded.
